HistorySeaside Lawn Bowling Club has its origin in the Scottish
shipbuilding industry and the British tradition of working men banding together
to organize their leisure activities.
In the mid 1960's, the Saint John Drydock was thriving and many immigrant
shipbuilders from Scotland and England were employed there. A group of them
approached the City Parks and Recreation director with the idea of starting up a
lawnbowling club.
Several sites were proposed, and an unused tennis court in
Seaside Park in Saint John's West side
was eventually chosen. The club was originally called Bayside Lawn Bowling Club; however,
due to confusion over its location, the club was renamed Seaside Lawn
Bowling Club in the 1970's.
|
Membership has fluctuated throughout the years from as high as 60 to as few as 14 members. The earliest
official constitution on record is dated September 1985 under then president Yves (Bill) Cliche.
|
The clubhouse was originally a 20' x 20' relocated canteen. A major expansion was
carried out in 1989. With the aid of a grant from the City, a 20' x 20' extension
was added, complete with washrooms to bring the clubhouse to it's present form.
